What Companies should Consider when Offering a Hybrid Model

The COVID-19 pandemic has forever changed the way people conduct business. While the abrupt swap to fully remote working was challenging for many employees, post-pandemic, it is now difficult for employers to get employees physically back at the office. Many workers realised that remote working allows for more flexibility due to less time commuting. Now, many companies are opting to implement a hybrid work model to create a new normal. At GCS Malta, our recruiters discuss what companies need to consider before switching to a hybrid work model.

What the employees want

According to a PwC US return to work survey, over 55% of employees would like to work remotely at least 3 days per week. However, businesses need to understand that there is no one-size-fits-all hybrid work model. This is why it is crucial for employers to ask their employees what they want and expect from the company in terms of flexible work arrangements and then aim to accommodate their wants.

How to strike the ideal balance

Post gathering the data, companies now need to take the employees’ preferences and strike a balance that is best for both employer and employee. Whilst flexibility is the key to attracting top talent candidates in 2022; businesses still need to decide on company policies such as:

  • whether employees can work remotely from another country
  • how many days/hours will employees be allowed to work remotely
  • whether or not employees can pick the days to work themselves remotely

Managing company productivity and engagement levels

One challenge of hybrid working is managing to keep employees productive and engaged. Aim to train employees to collaborate digitally and provide the necessary training for all software. As well as plan team building and activities physically instead of remotely. However, while some struggle to remain productive at home, some employees flourish when working remotely. In fact, Google’s CEO Sunda Pichai stated that a hybrid model is a way to boost productivity and improve employee well-being. Therefore, companies must tune in to each employee’s needs and potential.

Data security

Whilst moving to a hybrid model is a walk in the park for some departments, the IT department has to ensure that the company has appropriate data security measures in place so that employees using their laptops outside of work do not risk leaking sensitive information.

The tools and technology needed

With the move to fully remote working, companies had to understand the importance of having up-to-date technology. Every company needs to check what software and hardware are necessary to facilitate participation and collaboration among workers.
