The Rise of the Corporate Nomad

While some companies insist on returning to pre-COVID norms, others embrace the new hybrid/remote normal. Recent studies show that candidates will pick a company over another depending on the mode of work offered. The more flexibility your company offers, the more likely you are to attract and retain top talent. Corporate nomadism is on the rise with this newfound flexibility. Our exceptional recruitment team discuss this trending mode of working in this article.

What is a "corporate nomad"?

A corporate nomad also called a "digital nomad, " is someone who is location-independent while working as a freelancer or remotely with a company. This mode of working is possible due to the advancement in technology which allows nomads to work remotely regardless of country.

While the average age for corporate nomads is 35 years old, it does not mean that younger or older people cannot become nomads themselves.

In the US, a report suggested that the market for corporate nomads grew by 49%, from 7.9 million to 10.9 million from 2019-2020. In addition, many countries opted to launch a remote working visa programme as an alternative to having traditional tourists during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as Aruba, Cabo Verde, Croatia, Iceland and Malta.

The Appeal of being a Corporate Nomad

While corporate nomads are only a small segment of the workforce, it is increasing in popularity, especially in recent years. There are various reasons why people feel drawn to becoming a corporate nomad:

  • Freedom from a traditional office setting
  • Allows you to be exposed to new people and cultures and to foster new ideas
  • Opportunity to work as many hours as you wish while exploring different countries
  • It is an excellent opportunity to build a freelancing network with connections from all over the world

However, it is probably more realistic to become a corporate nomad during your early 30s and 50s since many people need to be financially stable with a job that offers financial benefits to acquire a loan and property. In addition, while exposing children to various cultures and countries is a fantastic opportunity, it will also require them to be relocated to new schools with different environments each time.
