The global skills gap – ways to bridge this gap

The global skills gap includes both employers and job seekers. Employers require and look for specific skill for job openings that has to come from job seekers, so how can this gap be resolved?

  1. Apprenticeships will be the first on the list as it is the most effective. Pairing new workers with experienced mentors will help develop the skills necessary for construction, healthcare, manufacturing, and other hands-on job roles. MCAST focuses on apprenticeships, a significant advantage for their students and has positively impacted the Maltese economy.
  2. Skills-based Hiring. To help bridge the skills gap, one must focus on skills rather than educational degrees. For example, there is a job opening; one has the required skill and would be perfect for the role but requires a degree that one needs to have. You can get a much better result from someone with talent without a degree rather than vice versa.
  3. Education and Training. For workers to continue developing, one has to focus on continuous development. Applying for your workers to attend training and educational programs will refresh and increase their skills on the job. With the constant evolution of technology and competitive increase, one has to upskill his employees to remain competitive.
  4. Public-Private Partnerships. Since this is a global occurrence, employers can work together with governmental institutes. For example, providing workshops to provide the opportunity of learning required skills would be of great benefit to both job seekers and employers.

By implementing these and other strategies, the global gap can continue to be tackled positively, ensuring that workers are equipped with the skills needed to succeed in the modern job market.
