Let’s talk about mental health in recruitment!

Recruitment presents an excellent opportunity for aspiring professionals, recent graduates, and proven sales experts to improve their abilities, gain insights into business operations, advance their personal development, and enhance their commercial expertise.

Nonetheless, this field comes with its fair share of drawbacks. An intense sales environment, strict key performance indicator targets, monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals, fluctuations in successful hires, and pipeline lows characterise the industry. Few other professions in life match the unpredictable roller coaster ride this industry offers daily.

Stress and Anxiety are also considerable problems in the recruitment industry. Despite some of the industry's misconceptions, people get into recruitment to help people find jobs. Jobs could be the most significant decision of a candidate's life, yet a recruiter's role in a career journey is sometimes overlooked or belittled. This can have a long-term impact on a recruiter's mental health; without sufficient awareness, they become the 'weird' people in the office, left alone to fight through their Anxiety until the pressure becomes too much; they will conform or quit.

If you are suffering silently or openly, do something about it! Speak to your manager, speak to your colleagues, talk to someone! They may have gone through the same thing.

How employers can help their employees

Offer Options

Flexibility would be the critical component to offer. Being confined to the exact location for hours daily is desirable for everyone. If you observe signs of mental health issues in one of your employees, engage with them, recognise their situation, and assure them that you are available to assist them while adjusting address the issue. Suppose you, as the employer, have attempted several remedies but have yet to observe any improvements. In that case, it is time to accept that the current position may not be suitable for the employee and propose an alternative role where they can thrive.

Other options include promoting mental health awareness and offering employee assistance programs and support services.
