Internal Recruitment Methods

Internal recruitment refers to organisations’ strategies and approaches to fill job vacancies within their existing workforce.

There are various methods which are all very practical, and we listed the most common ways.

  1. Employee Referrals: Encouraging employees to refer qualified individuals from their network for job openings within the company is very effective. One can include a cash prize to encourage more if one refers an individual and the hiring process is successful.

  2. Internal Promotions: Rewarding hard work, skills, and experience is essential. This shows your employee that you acknowledge everything they do within their role.

  3. Performance Reviews: A consistent performance evaluation helps identify top-performing employees who can be considered for advancement opportunities.

  4. Job Postings: Companies can share their job postings internally first, giving the opportunity to their existing employees first.

  5. Job Rotation and Cross-Training: By allowing employees to take on temporary assignments or cross-train in different roles or departments, organisations enhance their skills and broaden their potential for internal promotion.

In-house recruiters and hiring managers often need to pay more attention to internal candidates when sourcing a job, but this is an unfortunate oversight. Sometimes, the right candidate for a position may be much closer than you think.

Why recruit internally?

An internal candidate will already be quite familiar with a firm's culture, and by giving new roles to internal candidates, a company can demonstrate its appreciation for its current employees. Internal hiring also saves time since onboarding and training take place quickly.

However, there are also certain drawbacks to internal hiring. "Internal politics" is one issue that could result in biased decision-making, according to Nathan Lewis, Senior Recruiter at ApplicantOne. A significant character fault [in a candidate] may occasionally be overlooked due to emotional and friendly connections. – reword this paragraph.
