5 Types of Job Interview Questions

Job interviews are challenging—both for the candidate and the hiring manager. While picking questions to draw out the candidate’s personality is tricky, answering questions can be daunting if one isn’t prepared. The recruitment team at GCS Malta discusses 5 types of job interview questions in this article.

Types of Job Interview Questions

Knowing the types of job interview questions before your interview can help ease the stress tremendously. Here are 5 types of job interview questions you might have to face:

  1. Behavioural Questions

Behavioural questions can vary in topic and tend to overlap with other types of interview questions. However, they are designed to showcase the candidate’s aptitude and approach to a task.

Example: How have you handled a conflict with a co-worker on your team?

  1. Situational Questions

Situational questions are based on specific scenarios you might encounter in your new role. These types of questions can be challenging since you need to think fast under pressure. Make sure to understand why they are asking this question, is the manager questioning your communication skills/time management?

Example: You know your co-worker has made a mistake at work, but only you have spotted it. What do you do?

  1. Skills-based Questions

Skills-based questions are asked to check the candidate’s theoretical and practical working knowledge. Typically, hiring managers will ask questions specific to the job rob—for example, if you’re a software developer, they might ask you about specific software.

Example: Explain how _______ works.

  1. Communication Questions

While some managers classify communication questions as behavioural questions, others emphasise the importance of communication and ask specific questions related to it. The hiring manager will look for an answer showcasing your communication and people skills.

Example: How would you go about telling a client bad news?

  1. Brain Teaser Questions

Disliked by many candidates, brain teaser questions are designed to evaluate 3 things:

  • Critical thinking
  • Logic and calculation skills
  • Creativity to reach the answer

While providing the exact correct answer is not essential, make sure to showcase your thinking process to impress the hiring manager.

Example: How many gas stations are there in Europe?
