8 Tips to Survive Remote Work as a Parent

Holding a full-time job while being a parent has never been easy, but new challenges have arisen with the shift to remote work. For example, many parents work and care for their children simultaneously, making them feel less productive at work. The recruitment team at GCS Malta have outlined 10 tips to survive working remotely as a parent:

  1. Categorise your work

Make a list of all your tasks and categorise them according to priority. Aim to schedule the most demanding tasks while your kids are napping or doing an activity. Alternatively, set an earlier alarm clock to finish the most challenging tasks while the children are still asleep.

  1. Create a schedule for the whole family

An organised and clear schedule for the entire family will help things run smoothly throughout the day. Before creating the schedule, reflect on what times you are the most productive and aim to structure your schedule around it. Remember that while kids require a routine, try to remain flexible according to their daily needs.

  1. Choose a designated workspace

Although not always possible, try to find a section in your home that you can turn into your workspace. A great way to include kids is to create 3 signs with them that you can put up on the door or desk for them to know whether they can interact with you or not. For example:

  • Green – 'you can enter'
  • Yellow – 'you can enter if it's important'
  • Red – 'do not enter'
  1. Establish boundaries

Before starting remote work, discuss and establish boundaries with your children. For example, explain to them that there will be times when you cannot interact with them there and then. Discuss the most important rules with them depending on your family's needs.

  1. Entertain your kids as much as possible

Plan activities ahead and include them in your schedule. Craft projects are a great way to entertain children without much-required supervision. Turn it into a competition, so they do their utmost best and spend the most time possible on one task.

  1. Communicate with your colleagues

Chances are that your colleagues are struggling with the same issues. But, even if not, many co-workers will understand and help you as much as possible – whether it's listening to you vent or rescheduling a meeting.

  1. Know when to switch off

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance when working remotely can be a challenge. Aim to be as productive as possible, but also realise when it's time to turn off your laptop and hang with your kids.

  1. Be kind to yourself

In addition to the struggle of juggling both work and children, many parents are too hard on themselves. Remember that you are doing your best and that there will be days when you do not manage to get everything you planned done.
